Four men made a promise in 1977. Their names were Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Their promise? They promised the world: ‘we will rock you.’ And, boy, did they ever…
The four bandmembers are best known as Queen. Queen, rather aptly, have ruled over prog-rock and arena pop since they entered the music scene back in 1970. They found modest success to begin with, but they were always straddling the fence. Their music wasn’t as macho and aggressive as rock. But it wasn’t as mainstream and polished as pop. What was to become their strength was initially holding them back. Today, on albums like Queen, Queen II and Night at the Opera, we celebrate the band for their unique sound.
Eventually, the world caught up with what Queen always knew about themselves: they were pioneers. They would go from being the outcasts of the rock scene to one of the best-selling bands in the world. Ever. Their estimated sales range between 170 and 300 million, depending on different sources. They became such a success – with albums like A Day at the Races featuring songs that would become timeless classics – because they refused to cave and do what others wanted them to.
Their work didn’t just reflect the zeitgeist, it shaped it. Songs including We Are the Champions, Don’t Stop Me Now, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Show Must Go On have become a part of our cultural lexicon. Through their music and the visuals, they became part of the collective consciousness, but tragedy was to strike. For all his charisma and unstoppable raw talent, Freddie Mercury was just one of many lives lost to the AIDS pandemic in 1991.
