Deez Nuts – The ultimate hardcore band!

Growing up, I remember jamming to a band that seemed to switch members weekly… That band was “I Killed the Prom Queen”. This Australia-based metalcore band released solid songs, with heavy breakdowns and awesome vocals, and got their blast-beats provided by the now Deez Nuts frontman JJ Peters. Deez Nuts was formed in 2007 after Prom Queen went on their indefinite hiatus, and took a more hardcore approach to creating music, a decision that worked out surprisingly well!

I had the pleasure to sit down and have a chat with JJ himself on their UK tour together with Boundaries, Brutality, Capsize and Trash Talk!

Deez Nuts have an infamous reputation as a party band that doesn’t care about anyone or anything, a reputation that can be compared to the likes of Chris “Fronz” Fronzak from Attila or Ronnie Radke from “Falling in Reverse” but what met me on the bus was the furthest thing I’ve seen from the reputation they’ve received from the public. While it’s true Deez Nuts have an image of not caring what people think about them, JJ Peters is probably the nicest guy I’ve ever met. After sharing a glass of Hennessey we sat down and had a chat about his latest RnB record, music streaming and how he enjoys making pancakes for his daughter.

Later I went down stairs to Underworld to catch the show; there was energy in the room from the first band till Deez Nuts closed with “I Hustle Everyday”, and unsurprisingly it was a proper hardcore show from start to finish! JJ Peters definitely showed off his past as a drummer with a beat in his vocal style that can be compared to a drum. The band lyrics was obviously very party-ish but that is honestly fine, not every hardcore band needs to write about rising up against the establishment or going straight edge. All in all it was a solid show where after spending a lot of time in the pit I headed home with a bit of a backache, but it was so worth it!

If you haven’t checked out their latest album “Binge & Purgatory” be sure you do and in the words of JJ Peters “If you don’t like it you never have to listen to us again”.

As always, I hope to see you soon at a show in London!
