by Oliver Kube (September 2004) They may not be "the next Metallica", as they are being introduced by the American MTV. Also the title "future of metal" as several US fanzines calls them may be just one step too high. But Mastodon are definitely one of the most powerful and at the same time creatively most thrilling bands of the genre these days. The second album of the New Yorkers begins with the explosive, but despite its power very complex "Blood & Thunder" followed by the furious "I Am Ahab" before the atmospheric epics, such as "Hearts Alive" or "Megalodon" come next. Their mixture of classic, often very fast metal in the vein of "early Hetfield & Co. meets Iron Maiden", some good portion of thrash plus the early 90s-energy and intensity of acts like Helmet can convince over the whole course of the album. The equally virtuoso as variable vocal and drum-performance add the last kick to the album. But it's especially the quality of the compositions that should see Mastodon soon in front of a rapidly grown audience.
