While their fellow students concentrated on the subject matter, Matthew Tuck (vocals and guitar), Michael Padget (guitar), Michael Thomas (drums) and Nik Crandle (bass) formed their own band. The four attended Bridgend College in Wales and got together in 1997 as Jeff Killed John.
With their metalcore, the Welsh soon went in front of an audience. After performances with Hatesphere, Dark Tranquillity and Atreyu, they had to listen to comparisons they didn't agree with. Especially for Matthew Tuck, the lyrics of the other bands didn't make sense and he made it clear that he had higher standards for his own songs.
New name β first record
In order for the troupe to move forward, Steve Strange joined the musicians. He was on hand with advice and support. In 2002, Crandle left the band and Jason James took over as bass. With this change came the name change. Jeff Killed John became Bullet For My Valentine. Two years later, the record deal with Gun Records and an EP followed, which bore the new band name as its title. With the disc, they stayed in the charts in Germany for nine weeks and expanded their fan base.
Driven by so much support, they released their first album "The Poison" in 2005. The new songs were also literally absorbed by the fans, so that the Welshmen went on tour in Germany. Together with Apocalyptica, they filled halls all over the country and extended their tour to Great Britain.
Their debut album had an even wider impact: With 10,000 records sold in the first week, the five guys conquered the States. In order to satisfy the American fans, the musicians toured the USA. Together with Rob Zombie, Chimaira and Children of Bodom, they grew their emerging fan base overseas.
But since Matthew Tuck once again couldn't hold back and complained about Rob Zombie, he and his band were kicked off the tour. He didn't have to be annoyed about it for long: Less than a month later, Bullet was allowed to perform as the opening act for Iron Maiden. At the same time, a live DVD was released in Europe showing the performance in Brixton.
Bullet For My Valentine Albums
After a change of producer, the five went back to the studio in 2007. With Colin Richardson, they recorded their second studio album "Scream Aim Fire". It was launched the following year and did not disappoint the fans at all! At the same time, the Welshmen accompanied Metallica and convinced live. With Still Remains and Skindred they went on a headlining tour. They continued to grow and seemed to be on tour permanently. In doing so, they never forgot their families.
If something happened, the whole crew traveled home and supported each other. This extraordinary cohesion is missing in many other bands. At the beginning of 2009, the band members retired to the studio. Under the practiced ears of Don Gilmore (Good Charlotte, Linkin Park) they recorded "Fever". The vocals climbed one rung higher on the quality ladder and became catchier.
Nevertheless, Bullet never lost its roots of dark elements, which are loosened up by poppy alternatives. With this mixture, the band has been satisfying fans ever since and at the same time securing a chart position. This was also proven by the Bullet For My Valentine albums "Temper Temper" (2013) and "Venom" (2015).
