Since they were formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988 by a bunch of skateboarding-obsessed teenagers, Deftones have lit a fire in the metal scene, imprinting their own sound and style with touches of those who inspired them. Renowned for being adventurous in their sound – and often tumultuous in their personal lives – Deftones are often dubbed the Radiohead of Metal. Their boldness and evolution is what’s cemented their hardcore fan base and why we’re proud to stock some of the best Deftones merch in the UK.
From schoolboy dreams to stadium tours, Deftones have definitely paved a career many could only dream of. The metal band have forged their own sound and their own legend in the scene, using their many highs but equally devastating lows to fuel their emotionally charged and resonant music.
Our Deftones store includes plenty of merch to celebrate a band that’s truly ridden the storm of being a metal band. Get your hands on a Deftones t-shirt, available in a range of inclusive sizes, or rediscover what made you a Deftones fan in the first place with special, limited edition re-releases of some of their iconic discography, including the 20th anniversary edition of "White Pony".
Releasing nine studio albums so far, Deftones have sold over 10 million albums worldwide. And it all started back in 1993, after a bit of stop/start with the band’s line-up, they found the winning formula, leading to a record contract with Maverick Records – a record company that could boast the likes of Madonna, Muse and The Prodigy as clients.
Clearly, Deftones had potential. And they met it. After releasing their debut album "Adrenaline" in 1995, the band found success and developed a community among their fans, heavily promoting the album by touring exhaustively with other bands on the scene. It was because Deftones were committed to the metal community that more people heard about them and understood their passion and authenticity.
Their sophomore album "Around the Fur" was released in 1997 and performed strongly, but it was their third album, "White Pony", that saw the band gallop ahead. "White Pony", released in 2000, moved away from the traditional metal sound into a more experimental direction. The album’s lead single ""Change (In the House of Flies)’ remains the band's most commercially successful single, and the album track "Elite" won a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "White Pony" also became the band's first of three albums to be certified platinum in the United States.
While commercial success was found, personal traumas started to affect the band. There was a car collision that left one of the long-serving members, Chi Cheng, in a semi-conscious state for five years until his death in 2013. There were also tensions between the band, fuelled by exhaustive tours and other pitfalls associated with the rock and roll life.
Making lemonade out of lemons, the band funnelled this into their work, and their most recent albums, like 2020’s "Ohms" have been critically lauded successes as a result. As the band continue to evolve and adapt, we’ll do our best to keep up. Keep checking the EMP Deftones shop for the latest Deftones UK merch – all fully licenced and official.
