When musicians give themselves such a band name, they also send a clear signal. Here everything revolves around the Middle Ages, musicians, jugglers, jesters and prophets. When the somersault mortale, the leap of death, puts an end to life, the dance of death puts the fool's cap on life. And that's exactly what the seven minstrels of Saltatio Mortis are excellent at. Even the names they gave themselves speak for it.
Those who invite you to dance are Alea the Modest (singing, shawms, bagpipes), Die Fackel (harp, bagpipes, shawms, mandola, keyboards), Dominor der Filigree (bagpipes, Pomerania, shawms, binjou, programming), Falk Irmenfried von Hasen-Mümmelstein (shawms, bagpipes, Indian wui, conferences), Thoron Trommelfeuer (Darauka, drums, percussion), Ungemach der Missgetune (bagpipes, shawms, guitar, percussion) and Lasterbalk der Lästerliche (drums, percussion, davul, timpani, progamming).
Not only the names of the musicians, but also the instruments promise excellent medieval entertainment. Cheeky, disrespectful, foolish and brave to the death.
What were the beginnings of the band?
In 2000, the Dancers of Death went into the studio for the first time to record "Tavernakel – Market Music of the Middle Ages". An acoustic rock album, which was mainly instrumental pieces. Only on some songs can Alea the Modest be heard as a singer.
Since the band mainly performed at medieval markets, it was regularly quiet around them in winter. The modern medieval rockers were not as hard-boiled as the musicians of the Minnezeit and therefore preferred to stay in their warm booth.
And this is where the boys discovered the home socket. In their next album "Das Zweite Gesicht" (The Second Face), an electric guitar mixed up the sounds of the medieval instruments. The band was by no means alone with this mixture. She now played in the league of Subway To Sally and In Extremo.
On the tour for this album, they were also supported by a certain Magister Flux (modern device). Other bands call this colleague a sound engineer. But already during this tour they worked in parallel on their next album "Heptessenz", which again managed completely without electric witchcraft.
As if that wasn't enough, they also used every free minute to work on an album with electric instruments. This album "Erwachen" was released in 2004. At the end of January 2005, the live CD "Manufactum" was released. And as if by chance, they produced the music for the audio book "The Mists of Avalon" at the same time.
When the pressure became too much
Anyone who knows the band will not be surprised that the minstrels did not fill all this. In August of the same year, the next rock album "Des Königs Henker" was released. They also played with this disc at Summer Breeze 2006.
But all this deadline pressure was not without consequences. Shortly after Summer Breeze, they had to do without three members. The torch, dominoes and adversity ran away. Their successors go by the names El Silbador (bagpipes), brother Frank (bass, chapman stick), Cordoban the Playful (bagpipes, shawm, flute) and Mik El Angelo (guitar, bouzouki, cister).
Now it took two years until the release of the next album "Aus Der Arsche". Shortly afterwards, the next substitution was on the agenda: Thoron Trommelfeuer and also Cordoban Der Playful sought their fortune in the distance. And yet two more albums were released. "10 Jahre Wild Und Frei", a live album and "Sturm Auf's Paradies".
