Dr. Martens – The alternative Cult Shoes

Very few shoes manage to represent both rebellion and timeless style. Every year, millions of pairs of Dr. Martens boots are worn at concerts, festivals and in everyday life. Rock fans, ravers, punks and artists all appreciate the timeless design of these lace-up boots and shoes. It's probably not what their inventor, Dr Klaus Märtens, had in mind back in 1947. After suffering knee problems, the German doctor wanted a sturdy boot with a softer sole, so he made one himself using old rubber and leftover leather.

The design quickly became popular, and it wasn't long before Märtens opened a factory in Seeshaupt, near Munich. Soon afterwards, the British family-owned company Griggs acquired the licence to manufacture Märtens' air-cushioned sole design. That's how the brand we know today was born. The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line in 1960. The original 1460 Classic boots were designed and marketed as durable work boots. The name 1460 refers to the launch date of the first model: 1 April 1960.

Everything changed when Pete Townshend, guitarist of the legendary band The Who, started wearing them. Suddenly, these sturdy work boots became a symbol of individuality and resistance. By the rise of grunge in the late 1980s, Dr. Martens had become a global phenomenon. Back then, they were difficult to find outside the UK. Thankfully, you no longer have to travel to London to get your hands on a pair of Docs. Simply order yours online from EMP.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dr. Martens

Here you'll find answers to the most common questions about Dr. Martens. We'll explain how to break them in properly and everything else you need to know.

How do I break in Dr. Martens?

Dr. Martens are famously comfortable once they've been properly broken in. It just takes a little patience and the right approach. Wear them around the house first so the leather can gradually mould to the shape of your feet. Thick socks help prevent pressure points and blisters. Applying a suitable leather conditioner will also soften the material. Whenever you're not wearing them, use shoe trees to help the boots maintain their shape.

What sizes are available?

We generally stock Dr. Martens in all standard sizes from EU 36 to EU 48. Simply click on the product you're interested in to see whether it's currently available in your size.
