The Aristocats is an absolute Disney classic – a timeless masterpiece brimming with charm, excitement, and those unmistakable melodies that stay with you long after the credits roll. It’s hardly surprising that, even more than 30 years after its first release on 24 December 1970, this beloved film continues to capture the hearts of fans across generations.
Cat Music and More
Inspired by a story from Tom McGowan and Tom Rowe, The Aristocats follows the tale of Duchesse and her three adorable kittens – Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz. Their wealthy owner leaves them a fortune in her will, to be managed by the loyal (or so it seems) butler Edgar. However, upon discovering the inheritance, Edgar decides to “catnap” the unsuspecting cats and abandon them, hoping to claim the money for himself.
Determined to find their way back home, Duchesse and her kittens receive help from the charming alley cat O’Malley, who quickly takes a liking to Duchesse. Along the way, they also encounter the lively Swingy the cat and his jazz band, whose musical numbers bring extra sparkle and fun to the film.
The Aristocats isn’t just a delightful children’s film; it also carries a thoughtful social message. The title itself is a playful nod to the English word “aristocrats”, hinting at the high social standing of Duchesse and her kittens. It’s only after being abandoned that they discover life outside their sheltered world, meeting cats from all walks of life – and finding friendship, adventure, and joy beyond class boundaries.
Aristocats Fun Facts

Fans know and love Marie, Toulouse and Berlioz. Originally, there was going to be a fourth kitten named Waterloo, but the writers decided three was enough to keep the story clear. - Famous names
Toulouse and Berlioz are named after French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and composer Hector Berlioz. The dogs Napoleon and Lafayette get their names from Napoleon Bonaparte and the Marquis de Lafayette.
