What are Funko POP! figures?
Funko Pops Figures are collectible toys manufactured by Washington based company Funko Inc. Known to fans simply as “Funko Pops,” these little plastic figures are toys based on characters from popular culture. They cover everything from comics, TV shows, movies, and video games and what makes them special is their small size and oversized heads - they’re also designed in Japanese chibi style.
Their success got off to a somewhat slow start and it was only when the Funko POP! Game of Thrones figures were released that the Pop figures started to really get the hype they deserve. The GoT actors posted photos on social media together with their tiny counterparts, making the figures huge news among fans. When Rolling Stone magazine published an article about the quirky figures in 2014, the road to success for the collectibles was assured.
Funko now has more than 1,000 licensed properties and you can easily find standard POPs covering every franchise from the Avengers to Dragonball Z. According to Funko’s VP of licensing and business development, Dolly Ahluwalia, “Evergreen and classic” properties like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Disney make up nearly half of all Funko Pop sales. Even some of the older Disney movies like Dumbo have now had their characters turned into Pop figures.
EMP exclusive Funko POP!
The popularity of Funko POP!s has exploded and there’s a good chance that you've encountered one at some point over the last few years. Some people have one or two, but a whopping 36% of people that own one end up getting collector’s fever! But don’t worry EMP has lots of limited edition and exclusive Funko POPs! to keep you interested.
How big are funko pops!
Funkos are usually 3.75 inches (10cm) tall and the official standard size for all boxes that contain a single regular POP! figure is 11.5cm x 16cm x 9cm.
How many funkos are there?
According to the official Funko POP! website there are now 9,920 different figures!
What was the first Funko POP! vinyl figure?
Originally packaged as Funko Force 2.0, the first figures produced were Batgirl, Green Lantern, and two variants of Batman, and they were first unveiled in 2010 at San Diego Comic Con. They were shipped in clamshell plastic packaging originally, instead of the iconic white, which they are now known for.
Who is Freddy funko?
Freddy Funko is the official company mascot of Funko POP! He typically has red hair and freckles, however his signature feature is his gold crown, which makes him easily identifiable no matter how he is disguised! Freddy Funko has taken on the guise of many different characters from a variety of different franchises, such as Game of Thrones, Frozen, Disney and many more.
What is a Funko POP! ‘Chase Edition’?
The Funko POP! chase items (also known as chase pops) are variations of the original figure designs that are different in either slight or moderate ways. If you collect comics, it's like a variant cover. They also have a special sticker on them and among all Funko collectors these chase figures are probably the holy grail in the collection. Not all figures are available as chase versions and they are sometimes released in very limited numbers, making them very rare and highly coveted by funko fanatics.
How much does a Funko POP! cost?
Some Funkos are super common and price wise you can pick up most of them for under £15, EMP often has funko figures for under £5 sometimes so check back regularly for great funko discounts and offers. For exclusive or more popular figures, you can expect to pay around £35.00.
Funko Flippers are people that buy limited edition funko pops at a low price and then ‘flip’ them for a much higher price, (often in the thousands). Therefore if the funko that you’ve set your heart on is a limited edition figure that flew off the shelves when it first went on sale, you should expect to pay a lot more in order to add it to your collection.
What is the most expensive Funko POP!?
The most expensive funko figure is Dumbo (Clown Face & Gold), which has a price tag of around £1950. Three different kinds of Dumbo Pop Figurines have been made, but only 48 pieces of the gold version and clown face were released.
Are Funko POPs! worth it?
These cute, and sometimes creepy, little action figures can provide a dose of nostalgia or make a day a bit brighter. Their worth is very subjective and simply depends on how much you are prepared to pay for them - most collectors will happily spend thousands. To get a rough idea of the approximate value of specific figures, you can look at online resources such as Pop Price Guide or the official Funko app.
We do not recommend that you think of POP! Vinyl figures as an investment even though some rare items can attract high resale prices. We think that its best to treat them as cool collectibles, focus on what interests you most and love them for exactly what they are!
If you’re looking for a complete collection, or want something that might retain value as a collector’s item, it is a good idea to collect an entire series of characters when they become available. To know what figures are part of the same series, simply look on the back of the box to find the other characters.
What are the rarest funko pops?
- 1 Dumbo (Clown Face & Gold): Limited to just 48 pieces of both the clown face and the gold version, these Dumbo Funkos are very rare.
- 2. Holographic Darth Maul: First introduced at San Diego Comic Con in 2012, and limited to just 480 units, it was an instant sell out. It is a real trophy POP for funko fanatics and the current price tag is around £1400.
- 3. Star Wars Shadow: An Exclusive Funko Pop from San Diego Comic Con in 2011. Less than 500 pieces were made originally, and owing to the popularity of both funko pops and the Star Wars franchise, the price tag on this little vinyl figure is now around £1,400 - £1450.
Proto Pops: These are basically prototypes of Pops before they're massed produced and can also be very rare. All Proto Pops come directly from Funko and although they may have imperfections, Proto sales are final - there are no returns or refunds!
Dorbz: Are smaller than regular Funko POP! Figures and typically have a round smiling head and cylinder-esque body.
What are Mystery Minis?
Mystery minis are variety boxes from a series that have a random character or effect within the box. Although they are not usually convention exclusives, many of the boxes contain exclusive or rare items. EMP carries a large selection of mystery minis.
Should you keep you POP! In a box?
If you are simply collecting Funkos for fun then there really isn’t any reason to keep them in their original box, although they do stack better that way. Some of the special edition pieces are packaged in a box with a plastic window to allow you to see the Funko without removing it from the box.
If you are a collector, keeping items in their original box will prevent marks and scratches and help maintain the value of your most valuable items. Personally, we prefer to take the figures out of the box so that the detail on each figure is clearly visible.
How do you store funko pop! collectible figures?
First, you probably need to decide whether you are a collector, or someone that just wants Funkos for fun. If you are a collector then you may consider keeping them in their boxes and also out of direct sunlight in order to maintain their resale value. They will happily stack two high in the box without risking any damage to the packaging. A bookcase or a shelf is the perfect place for your collection, however if you own a lot of Funkos (and plan to keep them in boxes), you will need to allocate a lot of shelf space.
If you’re not bothered about retaining 100% resale value then put them anywhere and everywhere - tony tiger in your kitchen, panic at the disco in your living room and Jack Skellington in your office!
Will funko pops lose value?
The prices can change over time and it is impossible to say whether Funkos that are valuable now will still be valuable in a few years time. There are several online apps available that can help you keep track of your POPs and how much your collection is worth.
Can you make yourself into a funko pop?
Yes! Well sort of. If you’ve always wondered what you would look like as a figure you can now create an avatar Funko of yourself using ‘Pop! Yourself’. According to their press release, you can choose over 1 million unique combinations of hair, eyebrows, apparel, and accessories to make your virtual self.
Where do custom pop! figures come from?
There are funko pop figures for almost every franchise imaginable, however maybe your favourite character is yet to be moulded in plastic or perhaps you just want to see them in a different outfit. Thats where third party POP artists come in, who are more than happy to make a completely customised funko for you - but be prepared to pay a little more. You can also try customising a funko yourself by using the blank DIY POP! figures that are available directly from Funko.
What does the number on Funko pops mean?
Every POP! Box has a number on it, which relates to the mould used within that series of figures. For example, if the box is printed with #1, then it was the first mould used for that series. If you have two POP! Figures that look different but have the same number on the box then they were made using the same mould but have probably been painted differently. If you want to sell your funko pops later then the sticker on the box might be part of the appeal for a collector, and therefore you should try to avoid removing the numbers.
How do i clean marks off of figures?
For regular cleaning, canned air is good, or a block of melamine foam (a sponge-like cleaning material). Both of these methods are chemical free and highly effective at getting into tiny grooves and pits on the microscopic level. If you use a wet cloth then make sure that you dry your funko properly otherwise it will attract even more dirt and dust.
My funko pop! figure won’t stand up – what can i do?
POP Vinyl figures have very large heads and small feet - so it can be difficult to stop them falling over. Some funkos come with a stand, (check the box it came in) and if not then a bit of blue tack on the foot can solve your stability issues.
How do i straighten bent funko parts like swords or accessories?
If your funko figure gets bent out of shape, then applying gentle heat is usually the best solution. The figures are made from plastic vinyl and therefore hot water or heat from a hair dryer can help soften the plastic enough to re-shape your POP! Or move parts back into the correct position.
What’s the best way to reattach a broken body part on a figure?
You can use super glue, epoxy glue, or even a hot glue gun, as long as the glue looks clear when it is dried. Use the glue sparingly and wipe away any excess immediately, otherwise you might be left with an uneven finish. If you’re not sure which glue to use then it is worth asking a DIY store as they may be able to tell you.
How do I know that I'm buying an authentic POP! figure?
The only time you are really at risk of buying a fake is when you use a third party supplier or marketplace. You might be able to spot a fake simply from the quality. Poor overall quality is a sign that the Funko isn’t authentic, however there are other ways to check.
If there isn’t a serial number on the foot, base, or under the head of the Funko pop figure then it’s a fake. The serial number should also match the code on the bottom of the box and if it doesn’t, then again, it is not a genuine POP! figure. The code on the bottom of the box also contains information about where the figure was produced and a reversed date that shows when the figure was made.
Another thing to look out for is whether the licensing information (e.g. Disney, Marvel, DC, etc), is missing or incorrect, if it is then it’s not an authentic figure.
The easiest way to ensure you get genuine POP Vinyl is to buy from EMP as we are supplied directly from Funko, and all our pieces are guaranteed to be authentic.
