How to Train Your Dragon
Sorry, we couldn't find any matches for your search
What’s Toothless’ favourite Tom Cruise movie? A Few Good Men. (Tooth. You can’t handle the tooth!)
Luckily the jokes peppered throughout the How to Train Your Dragon film franchise a much funnier, and this DreamWorks favourite really caught fire after the release of the first film in 2010. So popular was the first film – which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature – that two sequels would follow. All three movies proved incredibly popular at the box office, and the stories of mythical Viking tribes, dragons and slayers have expanded into a range of merchandise and spin-offs.
And speaking of How to Train Your Dragon merchandise, we’ve got one of the hottest collections in the UK. From How To Train Your Dragon hoodies to limited edition, exclusive to EMP pyjamas, hop on board and take a ride through Clan Berk with Hiccup, Toothless and the gang.
How to Train Your Dragon: where it all began
Released in 2010, the first How to Train Your Dragon movie was based on a book of the same name written in 2003 by author Cressida Cowell.
The central story of the novel and the film is the unconventional and unforgettable friendship between Hiccup, (a weak Viking boy), and the dragon that he was supposed to kill. The dragon is a Night Fury, and is thought to be one of the most dangerous and rare in all the lands. When the incompetent Hiccup managed to shoot one down from the skies, it seems incomprehensible to his fellow villagers. Desperate to prove himself, Hiccup sets off to find the fallen dragon and slay it…
That is until he meets the dragon. Feeling guilty for hurting him, Hiccup eventually helps the dragon fly again – and names him Toothless. A clever way for DreamWorks to inspire children to brush their teeth? Right? Toothless is named due to his retractable teeth.
With time, the two become a mighty duo, and even win the support of the Viking villagers. Through their time together, training and bonding, they help the pair defeat Red Death, a villainous dragon. This ushers in peace between the Vikings and the dragons… but it was not to last for long.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
The sequels opened up the world of How to Train Your Dragon, introducing new friends and foes, new love interests and new worlds to discover. In the second film, Hiccup and Toothless encounter the fearsome Drago Bludvist, one of the most bloodthirsty dragon hunters in the land.
The concluding film in the trilogy roared into cinemas and swiftly drowned out any flames with tears. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World proved to be a commercial and critical success, weaving profound, emotive storytelling with thrilling animation.
Hiccup, Toothless and the other dragons realise that humans and dragons will never be able to co-exist peacefully, resulting in the dragons leaving to live on the Hidden World. The parting of Hiccup and Toothless was a bold, brave move and cemented DreamWorks’ reputation as visionary storytellers.
