"Our family's little now, and we don't have many toys... But if you want, you could be a part of it. You could be our baby, and we'd raise you to be good." Lilo says this, quite frankly, heart-breaking line to Stitch in the movie, but it’s also what we imagine you saying to your newest Lilo and Stitch figures…
In 2002, Lilo and Stitch made their debut in what has now become regarded as one of Disney’s greatest animated films. The 42nd film in Disney’s animated library, Lilo and Stitch was something of an experiment for Disney – gone were the traditional prince and princesses, and in were aliens and unconventional family units.
The film tells the story of Stitch, an alien who was created by genetic experimentation. After escaping his captor, Dr. Jumba Jookiba, Stitch heads to Earth. He impersonates a dog and is adopted by a lonely girl with a huge heart named Lilo. Lacking a greater purpose in life — no friends, family, or memories — Stitch does a little soul searching and begins to understand the meaning of ohana – or family 0 thanks to his unbreakable bond with Lilo. Instead of princesses and falling in love, Lilo and Stitch was daring in that it challenged audiences to embrace a different kind of love. In recognition of the film’s bold vision, Lilo and Stitch was nominated for the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
