Today, Nintendo stands for Mario, Zelda, Pokémon and many other incredibly successful game series. It's hard to believe that the story of this unique video game company began about 100 years before Mario first appeared, as the brand was originally founded in 1889 as a manufacturer of traditional Japanese playing cards.
The wide and varied company history even includes the production of instant rice as well as the establishment of a taxi company in the years that followed. But then, from the 1970's a meteoric rise began with the production of arcade games. The birth of Super Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda followed. The rest is well known - Nintendo became the largest manufacturer of video games in the world and this was accompanied by an explosion of fan merch.
Nintendo: as popular as ever
The final breakthrough came in 1983 with the production of the Famicom, which is better known in the UK as the Nintendo Entertainment System, (or NES for short). The company's first home console was a huge success that continued unabated since the relaunch in late 2016. Rounded off by ingenious game titles such as "Super Mario Bros.", "The Legend of Zelda" and "Metroid", Nintendo is the milestone for home video game consoles.
In 1989 they created another console, this time in the field of portable video gaming: The Game Boy was born and experienced an incredible success story simlar to the NES. In addition to fan favourites such as Mario and Link from the Legend of Zelda, titles such as "Tetris" have found a permanent place in the history books. The NES and the Game Boy have become icons of video game history in their own right and merchandise now comes in many different forms!
