Some time ago hardly anyone knew him, now he's on everyone's lips: We're talking about Geralt von Riva, a witcher, monster hunter, womanizer and, by the way, the main character of the Witcher universe. But where does the gray swordsman come from and what is the fascination with 'The Witcher' all about?
From novel hero to video game protagonist
Originally, Geralt von Riva, also known as the 'White Wolf', comes from the fantasy novels of the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
The Geralt saga, divided into seven volumes, tells an epic story about the monster hunter and his relatives, there are also several short stories in which Geralt of Rivia appears or is the main character.
Geralt is a so-called witcher. This is a mysterious warrior caste whose members are trained from childhood in sword fighting, alchemy and a light form of magic.
Due to the constant consumption of chemical potions, witchers usually have psychic abilities, have a changed metabolism and do not age. Instead, both their hair and skin turn gray, and their eyes and voice appear more animal than human.
The witchers are, in the broadest sense, monster-hunting mutants who are frowned upon by the population and are only hired for dangerous work. And there is plenty of it in the Witcher world: the flora and fauna of the imaginary continent is bursting with beasts and monsters, which often use role models from fairy tales and folklore.
So it is hardly surprising that a few fans of the book came up with the idea of making a video game out of the exciting material contained in the books. Before the game only his books were more known in his Polish homeland, but after 'The Witcher' first appeared as a PC game Sapkowski's book series experienced a huge surge in popularity.
'Wild Hunt' - a monument to video game history
Although Sapkowski is less than enthusiastic about Geralt's video game appearance, the Witcher video games developed into a true success story.
The witcher and the fantastic novels it's based on became a fan favourite and there are numerous products associated with the franchise. And although the book and game initially didn't completely convince the trade press, the game developed from an insider tip and now a lovingly detailed game world exists, with a focus on an exciting story, which inspires fans worldwide, especially because of its gloomy atmosphere.
The second part soon followed, 'Assassins of Kings', which was more ambitious, bigger and more visually stunning. But once again The Witcher was able to fully satisfy fans again.
But it wasn't until the release of the third part of the series, 'Wild Hunt', that The Witcher Geralt and his colleagues were able to secure a place in the video game Olympus: The trade press overturned the highest ratings, prizes and awards were raining, the sales figures went through the roof and CD Projekt Red, (the studio behind the Witcher video games), suddenly became one of the biggest names in the industry.
The huge and detailed game world of the third part offers hundreds of hours of fun, an exciting story and countless tasks and secrets.
