Jack O'Lantern - The Jack-o'-Lantern

The pumpkin custom comes from an old Irish legend. The miserly Irishman Jack Oldfield is said to have tricked the devil when he came for him. When Jack died, he was not allowed to go to heaven and certainly not to hell. So his soul had nowhere to go and was doomed to wander.

In mockery, the devil gave him a turnip and a piece of red-hot coal that never went out. Since pumpkins are more common than turnips in the USA, Jack's lamp became famous as the Jack O'Lantern jack-o'-lantern.

The Celts were convinced that evil spirits feared one thing above all else: Fire! That's why they lit huge flames on hills and mountains. But that wasn't all. They danced around the fire with creepy masks and disguises.
