The Alternative superstars around singer Michael Stipe return with album number 14 to their beginnings: loud, raw and brutal songs, with the same intenseness as the calmer hits since "Out of time".

by Oliver Kube (04.03.2008) With their 14th studio album, the Alternative Rock-veterans sonically return to their roots. The trio sounds as reduced, raw and high energy-driven as in their early days. Simple songs, like the roaring "Living well is the best revenge" and the blasting, Rock'n'Roll-ing "Horse to water", e.g., could easily have been on "Reckoning" (1984), too. Striking is the intensity of the loud songs, like the title track driven forward by the blasting Fuzz-guitar, that we have come to know of the Americans' calmer, epic songs that made them superstars in the early 90s. The great mixture of these two components, the calm, epic side and the new/old, noisy R.E.M. is the absolute highlight of the album: "Hollow man" begins as an intimate piano ballad and increases the pace to a gloomy, faster chorus only to immediately become more introverted again afterwards. A masterly composition on an album that at the end of the day may not be the absolute highlight in the career of the band but that represents a highly interesting song collection.
