by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (30.10.2009) The first album of this cycle of four releases was appreciated mostly by those fans who loved Townsend's lust for experiments. Strapping Young Lad fans thought it was too introvert and calm - quasi Devy without He(a)vy. The Canadian is now dry and clean (alcohol- and drugwise, that is) - and a young dad. So, you may think the album title is the summary of hell on earth, a pitiless reckoning, the drugs and everything. We're not that far into the matter yet - now, the stimulating effects of drug abuse are celebrated. The opening track is a bit bizarre and aggressive, voice-wise, but in the course of the album, a certain relaxed atmosphere prevails, reminding you of Devin's more positive solo works. "Terria", "Ocean machine", and mainly "Accelerated evolution" - elements from all these occur, with one song directly quoting Ziltoid. But "Addicted" could well be sold under the name of Devin Van Giersbergen or Aneke Townsend - so unique and wonderful is the voice of the former The Gathering songstress... Divine.
