Despite the same titles the differences between the second Gorgoroth album and this one couldn't be any bigger: the English Akercocke create with progressive compositions another form of spirituality, than the Norwegian violent criminals.

by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (04.07.2007) For the current British, blasphemous Death Metal, the noble dressed gentlemen are the equivalent for Arcturus, Fleurety and Ved Buens Ende in the Norwegian Black Metal of the 90s: avant-garde artists annulling conventions and structures, playing with them and reconstructing a mosaic from the different pieces. Despite all blasts and Death grunts, the first two provoking titles "Black Messiah" and "Summon the antichrist", coming from the deepest depths of the stomach in Incantation-manner, can't deny that Akercocke is related to the godfathers, Venom, only across several degrees. From "Axiom" on, also the progressive likings break through with passionate, clear vocals and acoustic guitars: with this as well as other, melancholic gems, Akercocke stand well in line with the early Peaceville-pioneers, Anathema and My Dying Bride - just with much more force-potential, joy in disharmonies, Oriental sounds and variation. As alchemists, they are the counterpart for The Old Dead Tree from the other side of the channel.
