'Last autumn, I noticed that my friends and I were going through various changes in life. The heat of summer was followed by a season of upheaval - some things settled and solidified, while others escalated or imploded,' says Ed Sheeran.

'When I myself went through a difficult time at the beginning of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and process what had happened. When I heard about my friends' different situations, I once again wrote songs - some from their perspective, others from mine - to capture how they and I saw the world at that time. Highs like new love or new friendships were part of it, but also lows like heartbreak, depression, loneliness, and feeling lost.

My father and brother told me about a composer named Elgar who composed the 'Enigma Variations,' in which each of the 14 compositions was about a different person from his circle of friends. That inspired me for this album. When I recorded 'Subtract' with Aaron Dessner, we immediately clicked. We practically wrote or recorded non-stop, and the album emerged from this partnership. I think he captured the feeling of autumn in such a wonderful way sonically. Hopefully, you will love it as much as I do.'
