by Matthias Mineur (July 2004) It seems as if the British melodic rockers of Magnum would manage to get back to their creative heydays. While the comeback-album, 'Breath Of Life' still had some weak spots lacking a bit of power and dynamics, composer/producer/guitarist Tony Clarkin modifies this impression with 'Brand New Morning'. The guitars are clearly stronger, the drums groovier and the songs are more convincing than most of the band's material of the last decade. Already the opening title track leads the way: rockwards full of melody and pathos. Singer Bob Catley adapts to it and lets his vocal chords vibrate a bit rougher. But not only the rocky sounds on 'Brand New Morning' can convince, also the usual, emotional and softer tracks are very catchy. A little masterpiece at the end of the album: clocking in at almost 10 minutes, 'The Scarecrow' has everything a true Magnum needs. (Matthias Mineur - July 2004)
