9.Call of the mastodon
by Matthias Mader (20.01.2006) „Call of the mastodon“ marks a historical release: it is the first studio album of the band. All nine songs were remixed and remastered and the cover shows a great painting of Paul Romano who supoorted the band from their early days on. What brings “Call of the mastodon“ musically? Songs, like “Shadows that move“ or “Welcoming war“ celebrate not yet quite matured but always highly complex death metal with the genre typical vocal grunts. The compositions are marked by tempo and especially rhythm changes, in times close to grind core (like in “Call of the mastodon“) and are definitely no typical death metal. My personal highlight is the great “Battle at sea“ with its many surprising changes - almost the death metal variant of Iron Maiden's “Rime of the ancient mariner“ - well done!
