by Matthias Mineur (08/01) Ville Hermanni Valo has no easy job. With his avalanche hit "Join me" he became a superstar overnight. Everybody asked for him - interviews, autographs, photos, concerts, a memory, a sight, a touch of hand. All that even though the charismatic frontman and His Infernal Majesty should predominantly take care of their music. Consequently, "Deep shadows and brilliant highlights", the successor of "Razorblade romance" was written between the leaving and the loving, meaning in hotel rooms on tour, in backstage areas and dressing rooms. And hand on the heart: it can be heard in the material that it was not written with full concentration. So, the album got its title for a good reason. There are several shadows and even fewer highlights. "Pretending", the first single is not one of them, although one has to say that it fits perfectly into the nowadays radio program. Maybe that's the new strength of HIM since average songs are still enough to get airplay.
