by Matthias Mineur (23.01.2006) By the late 80s, Saxon finally seemed to have it. Sinking sales figures and disagreements about the stylistic course of the band brought this ship into troubled waters. But with “A solid ball of rock“, the band furiously returned, followed by the the equally great “Dogs of war“ in 1995. The re-release of this milestone comes with a black frame, new liner notes by Byford as well as the two bonus tracks, “The great white buffalo“ and “Denim & leather“, recorded live on the “Dogs of war“-Tour. The booklet was refurnished, too and presents previously unreleased pictures and a different cover artwork. On “Dogs of war“, you can hear the original guitarist, Graham Oliver, for the last time, by the way, as he was fired shortly after the studio recordings. Already on the '95er “Dogs of war' world tour he had been replaced by Doug Scarratt. Consequently, the two live bonus tracks are the first Saxon-recordings with Scarratt, too!
