by Markus Eck (November 2004) Sold out for a long time, these two records of the Finnish epic Death metal pioneers are now being re-released: "Elegy" as a limited digipack featuring three live bonus tracks, namely "Better unborn", "Against widows" and "The castaway". "Elegy" was the successor to the already legendary masterpiece, "Tales from the thousand lakes" and was originally released in 1996. While the hugely successful predecessor had still been a pure Nordic Death Metal-album with some great melodies, Amorphis began to introduce their psychedelic side on "Elegy". Variably arranged keyboard-epics with a predominantly progressive touch to them and with very variable vocals. "Tuonela" on the other side, released in 1999, showed Amorphis again from another surprising musical side: by the aid of amplified, strange 70s-prog and space rock influences they performed traditional folk of their home country resulting in a beautiful album with depth, still progressive but of timeless grace.
