by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (22.10.2008) I agree with Oystein G. Brun who set up the band and is its creative director - he says in the liner notes of the exemplary booklet of this CD: after the end of his Death Metal band Molested, Borknagar chose an experimental path from the start and tried to break open pure, traditional Black Metal together with Ulver and Enslaved (some of them were involved in Borknagar at the beginning) in order to establish progressive arrangements. First steps consisted of acoustical compositions. And after six great epic Metal albums, Borknagar entered this world again with "Origin" (2000). So, it’s kind of sad that their debut gets no extra attention (that would be an instrumental) apart from "Dauden". Exclusive tracks are missing, but other than that, you can’t complain about this terrific chronology. It’s exciting to hear how Oystein’s crew with their voice prodigies Garm, Simen, and finally Vintersorg got deeper and deeper into the heart of the matter.
