by Matthias Mineur (July 2004) Being Dokken's guitarist you have to have good nerves. Chief Don Dokken changes his string stretchers like underwear. He meanwhile shares a big antipathy with George Lynch, John Norum and Reb Beach left the band as fast as they came in and also the Italian, Alex Derosso has become the past. Fortunately, Don managed to present an adequate substitute for the new album, 'Hell To Pay'. His name: John Levin. The most important fact about him: he plays like George Lynch. Which on first sight doesn't seem very original but at a closer look turns out to be the biggest plus of the album. The songs are melodic as usual, the arrangements are typically centred around Don's voice and Levin spices his playing with solos that leave you breathless. Yet, the album has one weakness: towards the end the ideas become thinner, the rocky direction is being exchanged for some slower tunes. Nevertheless: a very worthwhile album!
