12.In this life or the next
by Matthias Mader (04.07.2007) How stretchable the term Metalcore is shows the comeback album of Damnation A.D., who look back on a very unfortunate band career. Founded in 1993, the Americans are regarded as one of the godfathers of the Metalcore genre, yet when the popularity started by the new Millennium, Damnation A.D. split up. That they have still remained unforgotten is underpinned by the list of guests on the new album reaching from Earth Crisis via Darkest Hour to Fall Out Boy. Honour to whom honour is due. Consequently, "In this life or the next" can't be measured in normal Metalcore-measures. The twelve edgily produced songs are all in midtempo regions and surprise with many instrumental middle parts. At the end of the day, the material is surprisingly progressive and not very easy to swallow. An absolutely worthy comeback album that lives up to the expectations in its very own way and that should be much too complex for fans of Caliban or Slipknot.
