"Jetzt geht's ab" LP by Die Fantastischen Vier

'Jetzt geht's ab' is the debut album of Die Fantastischen Vier and was released on August 27, 1991. In December 1988, Smudo and Thomas D, who were part of the mostly English-speaking rap combo The Terminal Team, returned from a joint stay in the USA, where they had also performed some gigs. While their English-language lyrics had largely been mocked, they had gained recognition for their German-language rap. Upon their return, they proposed to DJ Hausmarke and And.Ypsilon, who were also members of the Terminal Team, that they should henceforth perform consistently as a German-language band, which was met with approval. Smudo said: 'From that moment on, we translated everything. Really everything. We no longer said 'scratchen', but 'Platten kratzen'. Our music was naturally no longer called rap, but 'Sprechgesang'. It was a mission. It served our self-discovery.' By 1990, Die Fantastischen Vier had already gained a reputation as a good live band with this new direction. In 1991, they finally got a record deal. 'Jetzt geht's ab' was a novelty in the German hip-hop scene, which mostly wrote anglophone lyrics, and it succeeded.
