by Matthias Mader (22.02.2010) Chris Bay (vocals, guitar), Dan Zimmermann (drums) and their Melodic Metal crew have been around for ten years now, with five studio albums and numerous tours under their belt. In Germany, they are considered as one of the country's big Metal acts. Their new release "Legend of the shadowking" is an ambitious concept album dealing with the life and death of Bavarian king Ludwig II. Well, why not - that's a nice variation compared to all those so-so works on Nostradamus or king Arthur. Tracks like "Under the spell of the moon", "Dark obsession" (my fave!), or "Out of the ruins" are very melodic, but never kitschy. Most songs are pretty fast, so those among you digging Helloween in theirs early days and Virgin Steele should also be happy with this album. How about Manowar taking some leafs out of Freedom Call's notebook - wouldn't hurt them...
