    Beyond the Rubicon

by Ralf Koch (02.10.2008) This is a collection of steamrollering Gothic Doom Metal anthems from Austria which simply knock your socks off! From the guitars to the voice of bassist and singer Phred Phinster: just about everything seems to be deeper and slower on this album (think of a 45rpm single played with 33rpm here). This is their seventh album – and somehow, the songs seem to get tighter and catchier without being too simple or lame. More Rock, less Type O Negative, less Pop than Sisters of Mercy, less Metal than Danzig, Paradise Lost or The Cult, but followers of the aforementioned bands should be really open-eared here. Surprisingly enough: most songs -in spite of their slowness- stay within the 4 minutes-frame - the dams of time burst just for the last three songs (including the John Denver classic "Leaving on a jet plane"): each of them breaks the sound barrier of 7 minutes.
