by Starbuck (07.10.2007) News from Down. While the two predecessors were not undisputed, they practically shut down all weaknesses that had been focussed before. The five guys, Phil Anselmo (v), Pepper Keenan (g), Kirk Windstein (g), Rex Brown (b), Jimmy Bower (d) are no newcomers, Down is rather something like an all-star band. "Over the under" is more variable, more creative and less monotonous than the two highly acclaimed predecessors. Giant Black Sabbath riffs stamp the album vocally refined by a certain Phil Anselmo – of which I am not even completely assured that this is the Texan madman – because he fortunately sings instead of roaring himself through the songs. Also striking is the fact that they are aware of their roots, too, that is, they repeatedly incorporate the New Orleans sound in their tight riff blasts. Just listen to "Never try". In "Pillamyd", the early Black Sabbath send their greetings. The masterpiece on the album, however is the final track on the album: "Nothing in return". A song with all trademarks of a classic!
