by Patrick Schmidt (09/01) After a debut EP and many support slots for bands like Soulfly, Machine Head, Hatebreed, Snapcase or Taproot, it seems time for a first full-length album. Their Nu-Metal-Sound fits perfectly into the current music scene where heavy riffs seem to be socially acceptable again, and bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit or also Tool get one award after the other. Chimaira live by their unstoppable energy, heavy-weight riffs, powerful drum-rhythms and the (slightly one-dimensional) aggressive vocals. There are some occasional quieter passages adding some diversity but the rest is predominantly extremely heavy - which ain't the worst, anyway, only a bit more variation could have been possible. Yet, still my friends of the heavy sounds, you'll love "Pass Out Of Existence"! My personal favourites are "SP Lit", dominated by a surprisingly catchy refrain, and the extreme "Dead Inside" - just give 'em a listen - or order directly! (Patrick Schmidt - 10/01)
