10.Legend reborn
by Jürgen Tschamler (10/00) Their third album to date also appears to be their most important, too. And they did a great job, so much in advance. They are going for the ideal middle-line between their first two records with the bonus "Renegade" is produced much better. In this way, the Hammerfall-typical hymns like "Keep the flame burning", "Living the victory" or the grand fast monster-track "The champion" come in a very powerful manner. Fast, fuckin' tight and with an enormous enthusiasm, Oscar and Co. hammer their tracks onto the disc. Joacim managed to improve his singing, his voice sounds more compact and matured, which especially becomes appearrant in Mid-Tempo songs like "The way of the warrior". Hammerfall havde neither become more commercial nor anything else like that, on "Renegade" they just show a matured, rounded performance and underpin their status in the Metal-scene. In the three-and a half-minute instrumental "Raise the hammer" their are becoming pretty fast and Malmsteen/Stratovarius comparisons are at hand. Anyway, Hammerfall have doubtlessly lived up to my expectations with "Renegade".
