by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (03.02.2009) Well, never say never: 1993, Patrick Mameli shocked the Death Metal world with jazzy "Spheres" which isolated Pestilence from the rest of their universe. He has tasted blood again - after a break of 15 years, he has recorded the fifth album of the band. The only newbie aboard is Swedish drummer Peter Wildoer, apart from him, the line-up of "Testimony of the ancients" is back together. The cover art work, a mechanical ball, may already show us the compositorial direction - could well be the mentioned releases... But against all expectations, "Resurrection macabre" is murderous and brutal. Peter wields his sticks like an octopus on speed - nevertheless, he doesn’t lose his groove during all those intricate rhythm patterns and the pumping sound which is obviously à la "Spheres". Fortunately, there’s no bizarre guitar synthies as featured on "Spheres" or reminiscences of the melodic ondulations on "Testimony...". Mameli’s voice is 95% well-known deep growling and 5% variation of that - nice. Welcome back!
