by Marcel Anders (13.06.2008) According to some sharp tongues, The Offspring have become the Punk Rock counterpiece to Status Quo: a predictable band which plays the same old stuff since the 80s. Regarding The Offspring's eighth release (which hits the streets after a five year break) that is partially true: Dexter, Noodles & Co. rely on their proven and tested power sound consisting of hymn-like melodies, part singing, hefty riffs and catchy choruses. But they also try an acoustic ballad ("Kristy, are you doing ok?"), stately midtempo ("Fix you") and bombast-cum-electro sound à la Linkin Park ("A lot like me"). Ok, they have the courage to change - which is good, but at the same time a cause for an alarm because the Californians perform best when easy-going plus political lyrics ("Hammerheads") and these neat catchy tunes prevail. Only in those moments, "Rise and fall, rage and grace" really convinces you.
