Arch Enemy is the epitome of Swedish retro thrash/death. The Scandinavians effortlessly and joyfully deliver old-school banger riffs in the format of Slayer and Destruction, causing neck muscles to rotate almost automatically. Surprisingly, they manage to insert harmonious melodic licks amidst the chainsaw chord progressions, reminding us more than once of early Iron Maiden albums and atmospheric death songs. Stigmata is enhanced by its outstanding song ideas and wonderfully aggressive yet never exaggerated vocals. And the best part is: these guys can play like hell. Mastermind Michael Amott (Spiritual Beggars/ex-Carcass) and his brother Christopher are one of the best guitar duos in the metal scene, skillfully and impressively utilizing their technical abilities while always serving the song. An absolute must for thrash/death fans!
