The Devin Townsend Band playing live in Studio (Bonus-DVD)

by Matthias Mineur (23.01.2006) Devin Townsend is beyond any doubt one of the most unusual and innovative metal musicians of our time. It was as the frontman of guitar genie, Steve Vai, that he appeared on the scene, followed by a very avant-garde way of metal performance with his band, Strapping Young Lad. As a solo artist, Townsend acts not quite as wild and weird, also when his new album, “Synchestra“ presents him as a great song writer without any compromises to conventions mixing all sorts of genres. Sometimes, the eccentric American gets close to the godfather of avant-garde, the unforgotten Frank Zappa (R.I.P.). Because just like Zappa brought in even some commercial songs into his repertoire (“Bobby Brown“), Townsend, too, seems to care for charts or sales figures for the first time in his career. His record label speaks of a kind of peaceful album that is thought as a counterpart for the exorbitantly strenuous “Alien“-Opus (S.Y.L.). Is Townsend getting mild after all?
