by Matthias Mader (15.09.2008) If a band calls their CD "The ’59 sound", you may come to certain conclusions regarding their style. The Gaslight Anthem is a still young band which exists since the beginning of 2006. Directed by Ted Hutt, ex-guitarist of Flogging Molly, the four boys from New Brunswick/ New Jersey recorded twelve songs bridging the gap between Punk roots and Classic Rock. But The Gaslight Anthem also have Soul, which adds a lot of catchiness to compositions as the brisk opener "Great expectations", the relaxed title track "The ’59 sound" (strange enough, this reminds me a bit of U2) or the very bluesy "Even cowgirls get the blues". Sometimes, though, the four just play straight Punk Rock ("Meet me by the river’s edge"). A truly terrific album! Concerning spirit, The Gaslight Anthem are the new Social Distortion for me.
