by Olaf Plotke (03/10) Is this a punk album? Yes and no. Snotty riffs, a pumping bass, blasting drums and dirty vocals are the ingredients of every good punk band. Thrice are still different. Because as a listener, you can never be sure about what to expect. Suddenly, the punky "Cold cash and colder hearts" is crossed by a chamber orchestra and "Under a killing moon" suddenly drifts away into thrash metal. Thrice don't become, that's for sure. Nevertheless, you can't really call them a crossover band. They just play a different, more refreshing kind of punk with some great melody lines. You can look forward to some 40 minutes of pure entertainment. And while you're at it, take a look at the booklet for the lyrics are really worth being read - not your average pubescent bullshit, these guys can write! "We are the dead and when we couldn't top the bleeding, we held our hearts over the flame" - that could have come from Leonard Cohen.
