Product description

Comes as a Picture Disc.

It's been analysed and put under the microscope, dissected and deconstructed, yet it still hasn't lost any of its magic. Musicologists, sociologists and psychologists have offered myriad explanatory approaches for the "Beatles" phenomenon. Especially after the first single "Love Me Do"./"P. S. I Love You", was released on 5 October 1962, it dawned on English pop fans that the Liverpool group had set themselves up in the middle of the fast lane: "To the toppermost of the poppermost", as John Lennon put it. This single encapsulates the great mystery in a nutshell. Stylistically, the songs vary between country & western, rhythm 'n' blues and pop with a clear shot of Elvis and Buddy Holly.

Although the Beatles are known as the Godfathers of the so-called 'Mersey Beat' sound, their own songs did not always fit into this style. By the time their next single "Please Please Me" was released, one could have compared them more with an American motown group such as the Marvelettes or the Supremes. On the other hand, "She Loves You" has no real stylistic precedent in the pop world. Long story short, the Beatles always brought togetheir their disparate influences and turned them into something new, right to the end. Refreshingly, this LP also shows off significant influences such as in the form of the Isley Brothers (Twist And Shout) and the Shirelles (Baby It’s You).

The B-side shows the Beatles without Ringo on the drums as the support to Tony Sheridan in 1961 in Hamburg. They got to know him at their numerous Hamburg guest performances and were happy to support him in recordings for Polydor. During this session on 22 June 1961, the Beatles were also able to record their own song - an instrumental. "Cry For A Shadow" only made it onto a French Sheridan EP, but this can still be considered to be the first official publication of a Beatles song. Polydor only remembered "Ain’t She Sweet" with John Lennon as the lead singer right at the height of Beatlemania. Analysed and put under the microscope - and now perfectly compiled. For your listening pleasure, of course. (Oliver Kaiser)
