by Sonja Angerer (05.04.2007) It seems to be a tradition that a "Black Album" documents a big step of development in a band: the probably best known and juvenile-compatible J-Rock-band is no exception of this rule. With the slow "Conceived sorrow", they start calm with almost business as usual but already the following track, "Lie buried with a venegance" makes clear that the turning towards Western Nu Metal with English lyrics in best Slipknot and Korn style was no singular expedition of the predecessor, "Withering to death". This is the new direction! The heavy, rumbling "Aggitated screams of maggots" is a perfect example, as is "Rotting root", a pure Psycho horror track. Yet, the fans of the old Dir En Grey-sound are being served, too: the melodic-rocky single release, "Ryoujoku no ame" and the thoughtful "Namamekashiki ansoku tamerai ni hohoemi", with its beautiful, Spanish-like guitars build the bridge to the former days. Those two songs are the only ones with Japanese titles, by the way.
