by Starbuck (07.10.2007) That you couldn't expect any mainstream releases on Relapse Records is well known. With their latest signing, the quartet, Baroness from Savannah, Georgia, they again prove their lucky hands for indefinable, weird sounds. On their debut album, the band rocks like from another, in fact, their own world: dirty, bald, cold and dark. Bands, like Isis, Neurosis and Mastodon could be placed somewhere near them, still, Baroness are different and don't care about any rules. Between brute Doom, sick Sludge and 70s-Progressive-sounds, they find their own way and at the same time don't even appear unstructured. There is a lot of spontaneity and improvisation in the eleven tracks which you have to consume with closed eyes in order to form your own pictures around them. The quality level is very high all the way through and it’s the many details and experiments that make "The red album" an absolute rarity.
