by Markus Eck (26.06.2007) The sensational 2004-album, "Battle metal", could instantly establish the Finnish visionaries in three genre sub-categories at the same time: Pagan-, Viking- and Folk Metal. In fact, these guys invented a genre of their own. Afterwards, they took a lot of time to work on the successor - which is now being released. Time that was constructively used to forge some valuable steel. The new sword, "The varangian way", turns out to be a monumental, bombastic, orchestral spectacle of highest and so far unknown grace. An artistic feast with a massively theatrical, symphonic component that will let all invisible hearts of the old heathen gods beat faster. Almighty choirs are the topping on Nygard's enchanting, heroic battle vocals in the eight convincing compositions. "The varangian way" is the stable sheet anchor in a musical subculture that more and more degenerates in its manic, plagiatory craving for recognition, and the increasing inherent lack of ideas and identities.
