    The watcher

by Björn Thorsten Jaschinski (15.09.2008) Enslaved are certainly no slaves of the music market with its trends and hypes: from their beginning, they rather set the trends of the Metal zeitgeist instead of limping behind. The band itself is responsible for the dry, often chameleonic sound - the Grieghallen mark of the old days is fading. Keys man Herbrand Larsen is becoming more and more of a considerable vocalist in addition to Grutle - this should please more and more Opeth-, Katatonia- or even Porcupine Tree-followers. The Nowegians don’t neglect their dark roots, though - they just don’t emphasize the Black Metal parts that much any more (apart from "New dawn", that is.) The most unusual song is "Ground": the guitar wielders wow us with a Pink Floyd-esque solo followed by some Iron Maiden harmonies... Sublime - with considerable bite: "The watcher". Enslaved are unpredictable as usual: you never know when and how their songs will end.
