13.Inside The City Of Glass
by Andreas Reissnauer (03/03) The sixth studio album is not as sad and painful as the predecessor, "Last fair deal gone down". The main songwriters, NystrΓΆm and Renske obviously have experienced happier times, the omnipresent sadness of the last album has been replaced by certain calm and serenity. Of course, Katatonia still sound a 100% like Katatonia, the songs make you thinking and the whole album spreads the typical melancholy. But the Swedes have just become more variable than in the past and seem to be wanting to escape all shelves. Beside the usual heavy parts, we get a number of unusual still sounds, sometimes even performed completely acoustically, like in "One year from now". Neither can Katatonia deny slight influences from the Singer/Songwriter- and the Trip Hop-genre. But don't worry, this band is still at home in the rock genre, so no fan will be disappointed by "Viva emptiness".
