by Matthias Mineur (October 2005) The ingredients are right, the mixture is very promising: Singer Tanja Lainio fronts up the Scandinavians, Lullacry, who might be remembered for their great performances on the support tour with Edguy some years ago. "Vol. 4" is - nomen est omen - their fourth trial to lift from the masses of the average Melodic Metal releases. And they succeed, at least in parts: always when Lullacry really let it rock and don't let themselves go in shallow waters. Still: in many places, the band acts too soft. Especially Tanja Lainio takes up the trail of simple pop-stars in songs, like "Stranger in you", "Heart shaped scars" or "King of pain". A bit more bite and less schmaltz could have helped this case here. Further discounts are made for the general sound that in my opinion lacks in dynamics. On the other hand, lead guitarist Sami Vauhkonen gives his very best and again and again pays tribute to his idol, Steve Stevens. Conclusion: there is still space above them.
