by Anne-K. Fricke (22.10.2008) Kudos to Reflection: although the Greek Heavy Metal scene is very complex, the quintet has managed to be a part of it for 17 years now, continuously releasing albums and successfully living on their career. "When shadows fall" offers ten hefty Doom smashers and two intros. The opener "Mistress of sea" already sets the tone: a pumping, riff-laden Metal song, a bit bombastic. The band obviously wants to create a certain musical atmosphere which is achieved by the versatile solo works of guitarist Stathis Pavlantis. Plus, vocalist Leo Stivala owns an impressive voice which adds extra zest to the compositions. "Ghost ship" is a bit faster, the boys step on it and the riffing is distinctly edgier - a nice piece of a midtempo banger! The same applies to the title track which is also definitely a highlight of this album. "Desert land" with its melodious guitar has a more playful approach. What strikes me, though: keyboarder George Pavlantis mostly operates in the background, providing more atmosphere than distinct sounds.
