by Sonja Angerer (April 2004) The fourth album presents the 'Medieval rocker' from southern Germany at their best: German lyrics between sophisticate and rogue-witty, heavy rock rhythms and sweet Schalmeien- and violin sounds add to an explosive mixture. (Music-) historically correct is not what these six musicians set out to be, that's proven by many excursions into hard- and progressive rock sometimes even metal regions. Schandmaul are rather modern tellers of fairy tales who put a spell on their audience, no matter if in big venues or at the fireplace. The enw tracks are a bit more variable than the last which may result from the fact that also bassist, Matthias and violinist Anna were included in the composing side. If that is also the reason that here and there I hear some reminiscences to the 70s-rocker of Kansas? "Wie Pech und Schwefel" is the perfect to album to spend your time with, preferably with some nice Mets and some good friends. How often can you say that about an album?
