Here at EMP, we pledge our loyalties to rock. In all its genres. For Viking and country!
Viking metal is not just what Asterix and Obelix wore as armour, it is a style of heavy metal music identifiable by a lyrical and thematic focus on Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age. Mighty Thor meets mighty chords. Think Loki, but it’s far from low-key. Common traits of the genre include a slow-paced and heavy riffing style, stadium-sized choruses, guttural vocals and a reliance on folk instruments.
Viking metal emerged as a subgenre, spinning off from black metal during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Viking metal is most like black metal, and the two share an opposition to Christianity, but Viking metal rejects the use of Satanic imagery and occult themes in favour of Viking mythology and paganism. Most Viking metal bands originate from the Nordic countries, and nearly all bands claim that their members descend, directly or indirectly, from Vikings.
Though artists such as Led Zeppelin, Yngwie Malmsteen, Heavy Load, and Manowar had previously dealt with Viking themes, Bathory from Sweden is generally credited with pioneering the style with their albums "Blood Fire Death" (1988) and "Hammerheart" (1990).
Walhalla!
The best thing about loving Viking metal? You don’t need to wear horned hats or pillage villages to join the community. Instead, you can cop a Viking t-shirt from EMP. In our online Viking metal shop, we have a huge collection of Viking t-shirts and other Viking bands merch. From officially licenced merch for bands including Amon Amarth.
Other Viking tees are inspired by the Norse mythology itself, with nods to Odin and 'Walhalla' – the hall where slain gods and heroes would meet Odin. Like a lightning bolt, Viking inspired art from artists including Axel Hermann and Toxic Angel will give your wardrobe a refreshing jolt. Introduce these Viking t-shirts to your wardrobe for an everyday twist on a classic look.
