Dave Grohl has taught us all one thing. If at first you don't succeed, try and try..and try..and try again. Grohl was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2014, but it wasn't an easy road. A self-taught drummer and a force of creativity, at EMP you will find plenty of merch befitting this ridiculously talented rock legend.
As well as the drums, Dave Grohl also plays guitar, bass, shakers, vibes, keyboard and xylophone! Will anything ever be this good again?
Dave Grohl had his first guitar in his hand at the age of just 12. However he quickly grew tired of formal lessons preferring to find his own way around the fret board instead. His road to success began where a lot of musicians start out - in a high school band with some friends. Around the same time, he also strarted playing in a few local bands including 'Freak Baby', a British Heavy Psyche and Hard Rock band.
A turbulent start
'Freak Baby' rebranded themselves as 'Mission Impossible' and then once again as 'Fast', but sadly it looked like the only place they were going quickly, was nowhere. It was around then that Grohl decided to teach himself how to play the drums - a move which was probably one of the best decisions he's ever made. At the age of 17, he auditioned for punk band 'Scream'. He lied about his age so that he would seem older and less likely to be written off before he got a chance to play. Much to his own surprise they agreed to let him join. However it wasn't long before Scream disbanded and he found himself staring into the creative abyss again.
Then the magic happened. A friend of Grohls told him that Nirvana were looking for a drummer. He auditioned sucessfully and life as a professional musician seemed to be taking off. It wasn't to last though, and he would soon find himself once again parting ways with his fellow band members - this time under much darker circumstances.
Having released just 3 studio albums, Nirvana split after the tragic suicide of front man Kurt Cobain. Grohl was deeply affected by Cobains death, but was determined not stay in that dark place. He nearly joined 'Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers', but headed back into the studio for a solo project instead. Dave Grohl doesn't seem to do anything at half throttle, and he laid down a 15-track demo at break neck speed - playing all of the instruments himself. But, as someone who knew at the age of 12 that he was heading in the direction of 'faster and louder - a one man show was never going to be enough - Foo Fighters became a band.
👉 Did you know that Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins used to play in a band with Alanis Morisette.
Foo Fighters albums
New 4th member Chris Shiflett took on lead guitar just in time for a new album, allowing the band to clean up at the Grammys in 2000. They weren't only awarded "Best Rock Album", they also won "Best Short Form Music Video" with lead song "Learn to fly".
Building on their success, they went straight back to the studio and created the album "One by One" in 2002, noted for its introspective lyrics, it intended to translate the energy of the Foos live performances into a studio album. It sounded heavier and more aggressive and was underpinned with psychedelic music.
👉Did you know that before embarking on his Foo Fighters project, Dave Grohl nearly joined Pearl Jam as a replacement for Dave Abbruzzese?
With the band's growing recognition in the music industry, Grohl started to be invited to collaborate with other musicians more and more, including artists such as 'Tenacious D', 'Garbage' and Notting Hill band 'Killing Joke'. But the Foos seemed restless, and appeared to want to work. Grohl soon realised that with all the guest appearances, he was neglecting his own band. The Foo Fighters started to create new music again.
In 2005, they recorded their fifth studio album "In Your Honour" in California. It was a double album, one disc containing heavy rock songs and the other containing mellower acoustic music. They went on a world tour after its release and showed the world what they were made of, from New Zealand to Germany.
More Foo Fighters albums followed, up until 2007 to 2009, when Grohl decided to focus exclusively on guest appearances again. Then Pat Smear picked up the guitar again in 2010, and things got moving: they brought out "Wasting Light" (2011), "Medium Rare" (2011), "Sonic Highways" (2014) and "Concrete and Gold" (2017).
