Where is Ghost the band from?
This question might sound like the perfect setup for a punchline – ‘where is Ghost from?’ ‘Boooooo York City.’ ‘Where is Ghost from?’ ‘Liverghoul.’ But we’re not joking around. Let’s solve the mystery of Ghost – when they got together, where they’re from and who we gonna call when they’re up to something strange in the neighbourhood.
Ghost are actually from Sweden. So ABBA and impossible flatpack furniture are no longer the scariest things to come from the country.
Ghost are a rock band who defy the usual rock and roll antics. By which we mean… they prefer to not be household names, mobbed my adoring fans wherever they go. Despite having huge albums like Infentissumam, Ghost band members remain a little hard to identify.
Since forming, Ghost have appointed four frontmen. First was Papa Emeritus, who took on vocal duties for their debut album, Opus Eponymous, and its consequent tour. He was replaced in 2012 by Papa Emeritus II, for the Infestissumam cycle; in 2015, his younger brother, Papa Emeritus III, took over for the Meliora run. In September 2017, Papa Emeritus III was publicly ousted while performing in Gothenburg, Sweden, to be replaced by the significantly older Papa Emeritus 0 – later named Papa Nihil, an ancestor to all other Papas. However, Ghost’s new leader was named, in April 2018, as Cardinal Copia, an apprentice priest yet to earn his full Ghost regalia… only, it’s all actually the same person.
The frontman has always thought to have been Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge. Forge was forced to give up his identity in 2017 when former bandmates sued him over royalties. The only thing scarier than a Swedish rock band fronted by ghouls – the law.
